Longtown and District Historical Society have given us details of two talks they will be hosting over the next couple of months:

The medieval church in the Welsh border will be the subject of our next two talks. Ian Bass will
speak on “Miracles in the Marches: St Thomas Cantilupe of Hereford” on Monday 4 February at
7.30pm in Longtown Village Hall. Cantilupe was Bishop of Hereford from 1275-1282. Many
miracles were attributed to him and he was canonised in 1320. Mr Bass is completing a PhD in
Manchester and he has written a number of articles on the church in Herefordshire.

Cantilupe was also Provincial Grand Master of the Knights Templar, one of the subjects of Professor Helen Nicholson’s talk on 4 March.

Membership now costs just £5, Guests £3 per meeting. Please contact [email protected] for details.

The Beautiful Burial Ground Project Community Coordinator would like to pass on the following message about a workshop taking place on the 28th January:

The Beautiful Burial Ground project is working with the Herefordshire
Archive Service to offer a FREE session to those interested in the
stories told by burial grounds. On Monday 28th Jan 10- 12:30.

The burial grounds of our communities tell us about changing fashions
and traditions, immigration and of lives both long lived and
tragically short.

This session will cover an introduction to the archive as well as how
to use the archive to investigate the lives and stories in your local
burial ground.

Thanks to the HLF Places are free of charge but must be booked please
contact George, [email protected] or 01588 673041.
