5) Bartonsham Farm and Row Ditch

Row Ditch
Now a popular walk through the meadow at the back of Park Street, the Ditch was first documented in the 13C as ‘the rough ditch’. Once posited as a part of Offa's Dyke, recent investigations suggest it’s a natural, post Ice Age Palaeolithic water channel. Documentary evidence indicates it was developed to form part of the Scottish army’s siege fortifications during the Civil War in 1645 and as such is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
A Scottish army, part of the Parliamentarian forces, camped in the Bartonsham Meadows, laid siege to Hereford city, then held by Royalists. However, while a 2017 Heritage Lottery funded archaeological dig failed to find any artefacts, it did confirm several gaps in the bank that could indicate access ramps made for the beseigers attacking the city.
