We're planning a summer Bassom Hut swimming-themed picnic in 2016. Does anyone have any more photos or information about this swimming hut from the 1920s, on the Wye banks along Bartonsham fields?
Information from our original article here.
James Charles (far left, middle row) who died at Credenhill. (Photo: Judith Morgan) The memorial plaque commemorating the departure of The Herefords for Suvla Bay, Gallipoli was unveiled at The Volunteer Inn on July 18. The battle of Gallipoli, the fight to wrest control of the strategically important straits from the Turkish army in the Dardanelles in 1915, involved men from Herefordshire, Australia and New Zealand. Ironically it also cost the life of one former Hereford lad who had emigrated to Australia. Postman William Charles was one of four sons of police constable William Charles and his wife Hannah who lived at 3 DeLacy Street until they moved to Park Street. William emigrated after reading an article in the parish magazine about ‘the happy useful life’ that Australia promised. The 20-year-old was working on cattle stations when war broke out, writes Judith Morgan. He joined the Australian Imperial Force in April 1915, but died at Gallipoli alongside many of his former Herefordshire mates that August. The story has a sad footnote. William’s older brother, Jim, enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery five months after his brother was killed. He survived fighting in France and the influenza epidemic of 1919. In 1923 Jim (far left, middle row), who was engaged to one Nellie Davies, was killed decommissioning a faulty shell at Credenhill. According to the inquest his was the second death at the munitions stores. William Charles, centre in Egypt on his way to Gallipoli. (Photo: Judith Morgan)
Five new people registered on Saturday and a good 50 or 60 people visited the exhibition and 20 came to the film, despite the weather. Thanks to everyone who helped especially Christine, Ian, Lorna, Shaneagh, Brian, Colin, Linda, David and Eileen. We’re hoping to meet on Wednesday May 13 at the Volunteer, 7.30 to: 1. plan for the History Day in July; 2. arrange for more interviewing; 3. collecting more material for exhibition; 4. feedback on the website. (One visitor wants to see a history of the Pavilion posted there) Meanwhile Esme Fosberry has loaned some photos of her days at Sankeys - we’ll post them on the website in the next few days. We’re looking for a few more volunteers to help out on our stall at The Pavilion during this Saturday’s River Carnival (2nd May). Let us know if you have half an hour to spare!
We’re planning to set up a Living Local History tent at the Hereford History Day on July 11, featuring more local stories, photographs and old items. There’ll be an informal meeting to make plans in The Volunteer, Harold Street on Monday Feb 2 at 7pm. Hope to see you there!
The big Hereford History Day will be on July 11 at the Castle Green this year. We’re working with the Pavilion’s World War 1 Then and Now project and hoping to interview at least half a dozen local elders.
Want to lend a hand? Let us know! BHG will be at St. James Church this Saturday with a pop-up display of local history. 10.30 – 4.00. (Can you spare a half hour to meet and greet? Volunteers needed from 12.30). Can you name anyone in the picture above? Pop along this Saturday and fill in the details.
We’ll be taking orders for copies of the 1888 and 1932 street maps (£6 each). Find your home on these unique records and raise funds for BHG! |
